Why was the amazon rainforest chosen as a wolrd heritage site?

The rain forest is being destroyed by developers who sell the land to cattlemen to raise beef for North America, South America, Western Europe, and Asia. With 30,000 some restaurants MacDonald's alone needs millions of tons of beef just to meet the demand.
